If you ask any member of my immediate family what thing I won’t live without when I was a kid, they would, hands down, say it’s “komiks”.
Every after school, I would trot to the nearest komiks stand, sit on its long wooden bench and rent komiks to read for 25 centavos per piece. Naaalala ko pa yung mga titulo ng komiks noon: Aliwan, Hiwaga, Wakasan, Happy, at ang paborito ko, ang Pilipino Funny Komiks. They said I get lost just sitting among other komiks readers being the smallest (if not the youngest). The komiks stand was situated at the end of a commercial block where a hardware store, a religious store, a bakery, a photo imaging and developing shop, a turu-turo, and a liempo stand fared. If I weren’t home, they’re sure to find me at the komiks stand just sitting there reading away.
Ah, those were the days…
